I made my professional boxing debut over a decade ago, but not only do I still use boxing as an exercise tool, I also utilize the lessons it teaches to help guide me throughout my life. And because of major advancements in technology, you don't actually have to step into a boxing gym or ring to get most of the benefits.

RELATED: How to Get Ripped

A lesson you will learn from boxing is to roll with the punches, something we all have to do to get on in life, and as many of us continue to look for new, creative ways to get or stay fit, I wanted to share a way to do an at-home boxing workout

Boxing is a great workout option because it can be done with minimal equipment, by yourself or with a partner, and it works your entire body. A boxing workout will not only reduce stress and increase self-defense skills, but also help you to reach those New Year's resolutions in a fun and interactive way.

With that being said, the following are my top five recommendations for apps that will help you to gain or build boxing and self-defense skills:

Kickboxing Fitness Workout

This app teaches martial arts skills to improve self-defense, stamina, and coordination, among others, in a group class setting. It features beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels with 3D models that were developed by a certified personal trainer.

This free app offers a bevy of useful features and instruction, making it a great place for anyone to get in a total-body workout, but you can upgrade and personalize your experience with some of the paid extras.

Heavy Bag Pro

Although not just a boxing app, Heavy Bag Pro is a phenomenal tool for aspiring boxers, punchers, kickboxers, and Muay Thai fighters, or just the everyday man or woman looking to use these fighting styles to get in the best shape of their life. The app asks you to choose your preferred training style and then gives you the option of doing drills, HIIT workouts, partner workouts, or specific skill training focused on defense, offense, power, speed and mobility. The basic workouts are all free, but if you choose to upgrade, you can unlock workouts tailored by real-life boxing professionals and coaches.

These apps are a great place for someone who is beginning their boxing, exercise, or fitness journey. Now, I’m not saying you will become a professional boxer by using these apps, but if you are looking to get into boxing or change up your workout routine, give these a download. If you end up liking it, make your way to your local boxing ring once it's safe to do so and show off your new skills!
